While I was on assignment for National Geographic on the Caspian Sea, I managed to obtain, with a great deal of trouble, an authorization to photograph the stud farms where the famed Akhal Teke horses of Turkmenistan are jealously guarded. A traditional spectacle was in preparation. I wanted to capture the sense of freedom of the animal, the rapport of friendship and understanding between man and beast, and the purity and grace of these horses.
