Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Grey seal among breaking waves - Using naturally occurring frames can be a very effective and creative way of capturing images of wildlife. Photographing a mute swan cygnet framed by the gentle sweep of an adults neck, shooting through a 'window' in dense vegetation to create a diffuse border around one's subject, even shooting through the kegs of an elephant to frame a distant antelope. These are just a few of countless possibilities that exist within the natural world and the possibility of achieving this type of image was part of the motivation for what I was trying to achieve here. It helps of course if the subject, such as this inquisitive female grey seal, is looking directly at the camera as this can potentially create a favourable symmetry, balancing the image and focussing the viewers’ attention. It also, as luck would have it, seems to create a greater likelihood of capturing a convenient frame of water around the seal. It goes without saying that there is always a huge element of luck when images such as this serendipitously occur and despite many attempts I've never been able to improve on this particular piece of good fortune. This I guess though is just the nature of wildlife photography and when a few surprising elements conveniently collide a nice portrait can result.
