This colour lithograph is by Czech artist Alphonse Mucha. It’s titled ‘Salomé’ and was made in 1897. The tale of Salome has long been a favourite subject for artists – from Renaissance depictions by Titian to Aubrey Beardsley’s illustrations for Oscar Wilde’s play. The story often presents Salome dancing for king Herod, impressing him so much that he offered her anything. Encouraged by her mother, Salome then asked for the head of John the Baptist on a platter.
