Although George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones is filled with fantastical creatures, the dire wolf is not one of them. Before going extinct 10,000 years ago, these carnivores lived in North America at the same time as large mammals such as camels, horses, bison, and giant ground sloths. The dire wolf was about the same size as a modern grey wolf, but had a more robust skeleton. These top dogs represent the pinnacle of pursuit predators, with leg joints specialized for long-distance running and a range of motion restricted to a single plane for increased efficiency. This dire wolf skull pictured above, from the Museum's fossil collection, was excavated from the La Brea tar pits. Evidence of the intensity of predation, or perhaps competition with other dire wolves, can be gleaned from healed injuries like the blow to the top of the braincase that this animal survived prior to being laid to rest in its asphalt grave. #direwolf #gameofthrones #naturalhistory #fossils #fossil #direwolves #amnh #extinct #extinction #winteriscoming #winterishere
