Sam Shepard, a prolific, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright who was also a fearsomely adept author, actor, director, and screenwriter, died last Thursday. In a 2014 interview with Vanity Fair, he joked about people marveling over the fact that he was both an adept writer and actor: "It's kind of a mystery to me that people find it so confusing . . . it's been done for centuries."
