RIP MY FRIEND SAM SHEPARD: this has taken a day to process. I met Sam & Jessica at my show at Continental in Austin in 94. Jess went bak to their hotel & Sam & I drank bourbon all night while I quoted "True West" & he quoted Harlan Howard songs, ending the night smoking a joint out behind the club talking about Irish writers & Duane Eddy. This was just the beginning. The next morning he called me personally & licensed what wud b my 1st song in a film he was directing based on his play "Curse of the Starving Class" w/ Kathy Bates. 56 films/TV shows later that's still the most important one. Sam, Jessica & their son Jesse who went to UT we're amazing people. I ended up naming my son after Sam & told him this the day he was born & he choked up. Phone went silent. Sam was everything a man should be...sensitive but masculine, well read but still very down home, a drinker but still prolific, wild but family oriented. I will miss you my friend & thank you for teaching me at a very young age how to embrace the world & all its gifts without losing who I am & where I'm from. xo JD #samshepard #friends #mentor #playwright #actor #songwriter #sad
