And there is none more majestic than Ashford Castle in County Mayo. Legends still linger here like that of the Irish pirate queen Grace O’Malley, who once threatened this castle, sailing from her own fortress on Clare Island. Other tales locals would tell you involved Princess Grace of Monaco, or Edward, Prince of Wales, Hollywood’s John Wayne or President Ronald Reagan, all one-time guests or residents who succumbed to the charm of this stately retreat on the shores of Lough Corrib.
The mark of a good Irish story, of course, is its longevity; it is never-ending, always in the process of being told, and amenable to retelling in surprising new ways. Thus it is with #AshfordCastle. Myself and Jeff ventured there knowing that in #Ireland, the past is ever present, and that the stories would be sure to flow…For now, we’ll leave you in the elevated company of the estate’s two #Irishwolfhounds, Garvan and Cronan. These canine lords of the manor could have stepped out of any of the Fianna’s Gaelic legends of old.
