A colorful assemblage of ancient bacteria finds conditions just right to thrive on the flanks of a geyser spewing hot water into the air. On planet Earth we can find primitive life around geothermal areas like Yellowstone, but on one of Saturn’s moons, Enceladus, geysers have also been spotted thanks to the remarkable Cassini spacecraft mission, which is now entering its final phase. In September Cassini will be directed to crash into Saturn to avoid that it might inadvertently connect with any of its moons and contaminate them with traces of life from Earth.
