I wrote an article for @outsidemagazine titled "Sportswear Brands Should Use Athletes—Not Models—in Their Ads." My point is female athletes deserve the same respect for their athletic abilities as their male counterparts. Brand advertising should reflect a balanced, realistic view of female athletes—from grace and beauty to physical strength, endurance, and power. With this imagery, we can encourage, inspire, and rethink what “fit” looks like. If the marketing campaigns fail to recognize the power of the image of the authentic female athlete, we threaten the empowerment sport can bring. We need to show the grit, unconventional strength, and diverse body types required by the sports we love. I am grateful for the inspiring women, like these three, that I have met through sports. Note:
I am speaking to athletic specific brands in specific sports, and that there should not exist this double standard. Of course I recognize the value in models and also understand that athletes cross over to terrain typically occupied by models. This fluidity is healthy and fine. I am addressing the fact that female athletes and male athletes should be respected and utilized equally.
