Cue the carrots! Strike up the squash! The Long Island Vegetable Orchestra plays instruments made entirely from #vegetables. It was created more than a decade ago by Dale Stuckenbruck, who teaches music on Long Island. But it’s not the first of its kind. There’s also a vegetable orchestra in London. And the Viennese Vegetable Orchestra has been around for years; Dale stumbled across it on YouTube. “Everything looks easy on YouTube,” he said. Over the years, he has added more instruments to his list. Broccoli and potatoes made melodious flutes. A daikon made a deep, honking sound like an oboe. Peppers, with their seeds, were natural maracas. Because the instruments don’t last, though, fresh ones have to be made every time they play. When our reporter @correality visited recently, the musicians spent an hour drilling into carrots and hollowing out squashes with an ice cream scoop. “I went through 7 before getting 1,” said one of the carrot flutists, David Elyaho. The instruments are then kept in ice water so they stay crisp. But with the temperature hovering around 90 that day, it was a race against time. Swipe left to see a photo of the makings of the instruments, by @grief. #??️
