Photo by @amivitale. Female elephant Shaba leads the herd of orphaned elephants living at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e). Part of the Namunyak Community Conservancy in Northern Kenya, Reteti is the first-ever community-owned and -run elephant orphanage in Africa. Their goal is to rescue, rehabilitate and reintroduce orphaned or abandoned elephant calfs into the wild. Rehabilitating these elephants so close to where they were found helps improve the chances of them being able to reconnect with their family herds once they are ready to leave the care of the attentive wildlife keepers.
