In this image from 1909, a clay model of a hippo shows a process that revolutionized taxidermy. Carl Akeley, for whom the Akeley Hall of African Mammals is named, developed a special method to model nearly hairless mammals like hippos. In the 19th century, standard taxidermy processes filled animal skins with bones, straw, excelsior (softwood shavings), rags, and similar material. Akeley’s approach was to create sculptures, based on measurements and casts he made in the field. #tbt # #tbt❤️ #tbt? #amnh #taxidermy #hippopotamus #hippo #diorama #dioramas
