Happy Fossil Friday! Centrosaurus apertus was a horned, plant-eating relative of Triceratops that lived in the Late Cretaceous, about 75 million years ago. In 2010, researchers discovered thousands of Centrosaurus fossils in a river valley in Alberta, Canada—a “mega bone bed,” at roughly 1.43 square miles, and one of the largest bed of dinosaur bones ever found. It offered evidence that some horned dinosaur herds were much larger than previously believed: Centrosaurus could have roamed in packs numbering from the high hundreds to the low thousands. The discovery also indicated that floods from catastrophic tropical storms killed these and other dinosaurs, and that they hadn’t just drowned while crossing a river. #Centrosaurus #dinosaurs #dinosaur #amnh #fossil #fossils #fossilfriday
