#DickHebdige was one of the first to coin the term #Bricolage and apply it to subcultural groups- labelling the #bricoleurs. Basing his work on the theory from philosophers and anthropologists before him, he spoke of clothing to be a sentence- and each garment a word. An outfit is a language that conveys a message that is then interpreted by those looking. What subcultures do, is play, disrupt and mess with that message, to reflect their interests, views and stances. The word bricolage can be used to two affects- and is often batted around in the discourse of style and #subculture. The first use of the French word- which translates to ‘#DIY’, can be literally used to describe clothing made from unconventional objects- low carbon footprint clothing made from recycled plastics for example. But in the context of subculture, it describes the act of subverting the often hypocritical and sometimes cruel messages of our wider society. Hebdige took the example of the #Punks and the iconic association with the safety pin. Something that was once a symbol of safety- used to carefully secure a baby’s nappy- has it’s whole significance flipped upside down by the Punks jamming them brutally through their nostrils or anything else. It now became something entirely ‘unsafe’. The notion and power that comes through customising, with playing with the signs and messages of clothing is one that should never be underestimated. The smallest elements or colours have the ability to say so much about you- and that should be controlled by you alone.
