Mountain hare emerging out of the mist – From January 20th 2018 until February 25th I shall be based near Aviemore in Scotland and guiding a maximum of 2 people per day into the mountains to photograph these astonishing creatures. If you are interested in working alongside me and experiencing these amazingly confiding creatures for yourself then please do get in touch. All packages are completely flexible and you can join me for as many or as few days as you want so if you are interested then please just email me at tours@andrewparkinson.com I captured this image last year whilst guiding and this opportunity simply appeared right in front of us. As we began to crest a ridge we noticed this hare sitting on the snow some 20-30 metres in front of us. We immediately, but very slowly dropped to the ground, primarily not to reveal ourselves in that distinct, upright human form but in doing so we also created a much more intimate and eye level perspective. It also had the effect of throwing the foreground and background out of focus and even where she sat we were able to make some nice images, albeit small in the frame. The joy with these creatures though is their frequent ability to do the unexpected as this is exactly what she did. With 360⁰ of open ground into which to run she instead decided that we deserved closer inspection and so she turned and jogged straight toward us. The resulting images were lovely but it was the experience that was most cherished, one of those extraordinary moments where an animal, with every reason to fear people, but one that was approached respectfully and with caution, rewarded our endeavour and gave us a moment to remember.
