Depicting a standing Sri Lankan elephant, this figure is a fine example of late 19th century Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) carved ornaments, and of the use of graphite as a sculptural medium.⠀⠀

This object survived the fire that destroyed Sydney’s Garden Palace and most of the Museum’s original collection and records 135 years ago this week.⠀⠀

The graphite elephant is currently on display in Icons: From the MAAS Collection at the Powerhouse Museum.⠀⠀
