In #FranciscoGoya's satirically titled series, “The Caprices,” he offers a biting critique of Spanish society and the follies of humanity. This particular print shows a hooded monk kidnapping a woman, a condemnation of corruption in the clergy. The film still from #SergeiEisenstein’s nationalist, allegorical epic “Alexander Nevsky” similarly indicts the religious Teutonic Knights, who brutally invaded 13th century Russia. Combined with #RobertLongo’s charcoal drawing of an atomic bomb cloud, these pictures act as metaphors for the destructive consequences of humankind’s baser impulses, what Longo terms an “attempt to play God over nature.” #proofbkm
