Poul Henningsen enjoyed a versatile career as an architect, cultural critic and writer, but it was his lamps that made him globally famous from the 1920s.

The Spiral was originally designed for the main hall of the University of Århus. The architect of the building, C. F. Møller, approached Henningsen to produce lighting to fit a 19m high ceiling. Henningsen created these lamps with spiral shades, designed to look as though they were drawn in one long stroke.
