Time travel might not be an option yet so we might have to make do with thumbing through an old issue of a magazine to get to understand what was going on back then. More in-the-moment, ephemeral and opinion driven than a book, the pages of a recurring journal can transport you to another era. Moreover, if the destination is the music and subculture driven era of the eighties - the specific answer is #TheFace magazine.You will know how much we love the London based, popular culture orientated periodical that ran from ’80-‘04- the fearless monthly mag totally encapsulates the zeitgeist of when it was issued. Issue No. 71- there was an ad for Underground on page 58 in the spirit of #CoolBritannia ( a couple of years before the good and the great of the world of fashion and music rocked up at Mr Blair’s No 10). We like that of course, but we need to flip the pages to the front cover and the seven page article inside to find the relevance for this IG post- the fact that today is the 22nd anniversary of the #Oasis album, ‘#WhatstheStoryGlory’- where the album artwork is a photograph of our very own #BerwickStreet, our home for six years. This particular 1994 copy of the publication features an insightful interview with the band as they were dealing/basking in the aftermath of their debut album, ‘#DefinitelyMaybe’. At the time that it would have been foolish to second-guess the impact of the now mega-famous rock-pop band in mainstream/ sub culture, and this article is a testament to that. Sitting here in 2017, we are all too familiar with the Gallagher brothers and the successes they tow. Can we dislike something for being too popular? Sure. It’s all too easy in fact. But a flick through this 1994 issue of The Face, the impact and all together meaning of the band is entirely readjusted in your mind.
