I get a lot of emails from budding photographers asking me questions about equipment and what they can do to find their footing in the industry. I generally offer a 2 tiered answer, and I think I can exemplify it with this photo here of my friend @buttertooth that I shot back in 1999 with about $300 worth of photo gear. It was all I could afford at the time, but totally did the job and was more than enough to have a great time taking photos. I took this with a Pentax #K1000 camera, 50mm lens and 3 #Vivitar283 flashes, all of which I bought at a pawn shop for under $300. For the young crowd here a pawnshop is basically Craig’s List now. First answer is place less emphasis on gear and more on how you use what you have. Secondly, access is everything, so once you identify what you like to shoot, find access to that subject and shoot it as often as possible. If it’s wildlife start with birds and squirrels, if it’s portraits practice with your friends and family, etc. I loved skateboarding so my subjects quickly became my skateboarding bros. Getting published and finding cliental is like any business in that if you have a good product then you can find a market for it, but first you need a good product so practice! Failure is more palatable if you’re in love with the pursuit and the art, be patient and take photos for the love of photography. This photo here ended up getting published in @transworldskate and I remember being ridiculously excited. Keep shooting, enjoy the process and don’t let gear limit your vision ??
