Sacred masks of the Shinto deity Sarutahiko are hung in the Worship Hall within the shrine grounds during the festival. The tengu mask (long-nosed) is Sarutahiko-no-Mikoto, while the female mask is Ameuzume-no-Mikoto. These two are believed to be the husband-and-wife deities who guided the gods when they came down to Japan from Takamagahara, the Plain of High Heaven. They are worshiped widely since according to this myth, they are the deities who showed the way and purified the path when the gods were traveling around Japan. In the same way, the masks of Sarutahiko-no-Mikoto and Ameuzume-no-Mikoto are worn,leading the procession of mikoshi shrines (miniature shrines) during the Shinko-sai Festival.
