During the height of the Blitz, there was a strong public desire to reward the many acts of civilian courage that had been shown in neighbourhoods around London. So in 1940, The George Cross was instituted by The Queen's father King George VI.
The George Cross is awarded 'for acts of the greatest heroism or for most conspicuous courage in circumstance of extreme danger.' It is the second highest honour in the UK's honour system. ?@royal_collection_trust
