"Blackleg" sounds like a Friday the 13th superstition or maybe a pirate, but it was actually a disease that killed cattle. This kit helped ranchers with no medical training vaccinate their animals. Blackleg was also known as quarter-evil because it typically attacked and disabled one hindquarter of an animal, killing up to 10% of American cattle by the end of the 19th century. This kit was developed by the Pasteur Institute around 1895. ☠️ ? ? From 1897 to 1922, the U.S. Department of Agriculture freely distributed 47 million doses of vaccine, reducing the loss rate to less than half a percent. ??? ? The photo of the cowboy filling a syringe at the Quarter Circle U Ranch in Montana is in the collections of the Library of Congress. The other images are objects in our Division of Medicine and Science. ? ? ? Stay safe this Friday, history fans, and stay tuned for more #antibody stories and #HistMed objects. For the next 8 days, we're taking a closer look at antibodies since they're always look out for us. ?
