No woman I know is surprised by the outpouring of “me too” from other women. # But an important thing to remember is that these were not all “bad guys.” Harvey Weinstein is a bad guy, sure. There are bad guys. But MOST of the boys/men who have harassed & assaulted me were not. # These were often my friends, or classmates, or co-workers. Sometimes my boyfriend. Good guys with mothers, sisters, and daughters, who believe they respect & honor women. Guys whose “good” identity was part of why I didn’t know what to do, and instead did nothing; told no one. Because when the good guys do it, you realize nobody is safe and there is nothing to be done. You are on your own in an unsafe world. # Yes I have sexual assault, emotional abuse, & date rape in my history. But more importantly I have thousands upon thousands of moments of harassment and violation in small ways, by men who will read these statuses and be shocked or outraged that such “bad men” are out there. # If you are a man, please don’t try to distance yourself from the men who harass & assault women as you receive this onslaught of our stories. # Instead, I suggest you get uncomfortable. Examine in what ways you have contributed to an environment in which women are made to feel uncomfortable, less-than, vulnerable, powerless, or like she owes you something. # Examine the way you hit on women, the way you talk about women, the way you (don’t) listen to women, and the way deep down you trust a man’s experience more than a woman’s. # Talk to other men about ways in which you have accidentally or unknowingly made a woman feel uncomfortable or afraid and how you can do better. # Listen to women. Ask them about their experiences. Believe their stories. # Really take this in— this difference in worlds we live in. This power differential that follows us everywhere we go. This awareness which permeates every moment of our reality. This fear (and resignation) which determines our behavior, our self-expression, how we defend ourselves, and ultimately who we tell our stories to.”
