Today, the dream of Kurdish independence was paused as brutal forces from the Iraqi military launched an assault on the heart and soul of Kurdistan, Kirkuk. As I watch my people fleeing once again from the terrors of war, I can’t help but cry. Looking to the media, I see silence. Looking to the world, I see hearts callused and minds trapped in thinking that refuses to support the dignity and self-determination that is deserved by my nation and all people. I am tempted to despair, but yet I know there is hope. The dream of independence that inspired my grandfather to fight and die for freedom in 1967 burns within my soul and within the hearts of millions of Kurds. And even more importantly, the vision of a free and independent Kurdistan has become the cry of millions of allies around the world.
