When I moved to Fort Collins in 2012, I bought a pair of gerbils: Mike ? and Tim ?. A year later they moved with me to Boulder. Through the lens of their glass tank, they witnessed hectic life changes and transitions.

After Tim ? died I froze his body so that when Mike ? passed I could bury them together. A year and a half later, in February 2016, Mike went to gerbil heaven too. However, the Colorado winter prevented a proper burial. So Mike joined Tim in the freezer. I hoped for softer ground in the warming months.

?Spring turned to summer, turned to fall, winter, and back to spring. I left a relationship, moved from Boulder, and reevaluated my life. New love and fresh motivations brought me back to The Front Range. Through the change, Mike and Tim laid in the deep cold of my ex's freezer, patiently waiting as I entered - and exited - another life crisis.

Today, I picked up Mike and Tim from their impermanent resting place. I carried them up the First Flatiron, allowing them fresh air and a view of their home one last time ⛰ Then I laid them to rest in a quiet place in the woods of the Front Range.

For the past few years I've carried the weight of these gerbils through the transitions of my life. As the wind blew I was happy to shed the weight, finally letting them rest in peace.

There's a special place in hell for people who leave their dead pets in the bottom of their ex's freezers. I didn't want to see that place ??
