Sergeant Preston Jowers at the height of WWII and a few years younger standing alongside the P-40 "Redtail" that he kept airborne as a mechanic and engineer. It was a hectic time of around the clock work - "I remember we had five planes that we had to keep ready 24 hours a day." The hours and the labor weren't the most difficult aspects of the job though. It was the daily challenge to be the best he could be, to prove, alongside the rest of the Tuskegee Airmen, that they could not only perform as well as their white peers, but even better. "I’m a black man and I know what I’ve experienced and I know what others have experienced--But to accomplish things under the pressure and the stuff that we went through, is a great feeling." And accomplish they did. With the fighter protection of this all-black air unit, American bombers for the first time were able to penetrate deep over enemy territory and played a key role in turning the tide of the war. The heroic success, bravery and professionalism of the Tuskegee Airmen went a long way in President Truman's decision to ultimately desegregate the armed forces in 1948. • Let us keep their legacy alive and for us not to forget the long battle these men and women fought on the front lines of racial equality. ?@elliotstudio • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • #Carhartt #portrait #100yearsofchorecoat #centenarian #100yearsold #100 #outworkthemall #tuskegeeairmen
