Photo by @Tim Laman. Besides Birds-of-Paradise, perhaps the most extraordinary birds of the New Guinea region are the Bowerbirds. This is a male Vogelkop Bowerbird in the Arfak Mountains of West Papua, Indonesia in front of his bower. He has built this huge structure all by himself, and for the sole purpose of impressing females (it is not a nest or house or anything but just a display arena). He collects various objects like the flowers, leaves, acorns, and blue berries you can see here and arranges them in artistic groupings around the yard that he has cleared and carpeted in moss in the front of the bower. It is pretty mind-boggling to see one of these bowers in the forest and try to comprehend what goes on in the mind of this bird…..
