Lucian Freud’s ‘Boy on the Stairs’ from 1948 is a spectacular early work by the artist and a highlight of #MagnificentGestures: Masterworks from the Diamonstein-Spielvogel Collection. Once in the personal collection of Freud’s own parents, the work depicts Billy Lumley – one of the Lumley brothers, who were recurring subjects for the artist – and is one of five illustrations created for William Sansom’s novella, ‘The Equilibriad’. Extraordinary in its intensity and exactitude, the work demonstrates the virtuosic nature of Freud’s relationships with his sitters, as well as the importance of literature to his oeuvre. The work is one of three by Freud on offer from the collection in #SothebysContemporary Art Evening Sale on 16 November.
