If I’ve learned one thing over the years is that moms don’t say what they mean and mean what they say. Here’s a guide to the things Mums say. Part 1.

She says: Put on a sweater on!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
She means: I realize you don’t think it’s that cold outside, you’re big and brave now. You really don’t remember how often you got sick when you were small, but I do. I used to sit with you all night with a wet towel to wait for your fever to go down. You would yell like a poor puppy, it chills my heart. So stay warm ok?

She says: Have you been eating enough?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
She mean: It’s not that I don’t think you can take care of yourself, but I worry it’s confusing with all these crazy foods fads they’re always taking about. It was much simpler when I was a kid but the only thing is we never seemed to have enough. That was the problem. Changes happen so fast. So even if you think there’s plenty today, you can never know what things will be like tomorrow so enjoy it while you can.

She says: You’re not working hard enough.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
She means: You’re so smart! The smartest in our whole family! You’re my hope and I would give up anything to give you the best chance being successful. You can really do anything your heart desires and there are so many more choices to do nowadays. Please don’t squander what you have, it would make my whole life feel meaningless.

She says: You’re working too hard.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
She means: To see you pursuing your dream makes me so happy but I can’t help but worry when you do it at the expense of your own health, forgetting to eat and not getting enough sleep. Opportunities come and go but this is the only body you have, it took me 9 1/2 month and a 12 hour nightmarish labour to make it.
