Indigenous cultures began creating the petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock, in Utah’s Canyonlands National Park, around 2,000 years ago. The hundreds of figures and patterns were created by chipping at the coated rock surface, produced by rainfall and resultant bacteria, with tools to expose the lighter sandstone rock beneath. Though I had seen imagery of the Rock before, while viewing them from several feet away I was awestruck with a sense of timelessness about the place.
