Painted in 1908, Kees van Dongen’s portrait of Madame Malpel marked a new type of painting for the artist: formal portraiture. The style would increasingly define his career in the following decades. #Christies20thCentury

Before this work, Van Dongen painted singers and dancers who performed in Montmartre. Madame Malpel, however, was of far higher social standing: the wife of Charles Malpel, a lawyer turned art dealer and philanthropist, she represented bourgeois society.
