As night falls, motels and RV parks across the U.S. begin to fill up with travelers who need a place to sleep for the night. But for many — some with a sense of adventure, others looking to save a buck, still more with no other place to go — there’s another place to go : @Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. The retail giant’s practice of letting people populate many of its parking lots has made its stores a reliable, if somewhat improvised, destination. This summer, 2 photographers, @mikebelleme and @george_etheredge, spent several nights on #nytassignment in Walmart parking lots in the South. Among the people they met along the way: Sunny, who posed for @mikebelleme with a stuffed animal named Fabian in Asheville, North Carolina. “You’re going to see a lot of folks out here running from something,” Sunny said. He added: “For the first time in my live I’m not running from anything. I guess I was running from myself.” This particular Walmart stopped allowing overnight stays months ago, he said, so he spends afternoons and evenings there before moving elsewhere to spend the night.
