Boom! ? On this day in 1881, the humor magazine "Puck" celebrated the revolutionary potential of the glass ballot box. ? Adopted in the mid-1800s, glass ballot boxes (also called ballot jars) were designed to prevent "ballot stuffing" and other forms of electoral fraud. Over time, the boxes became symbols of political transparency and democratic self-government. ? In a note that accompanied the cartoon in "Puck," the editors argued that the ballot box would help end the reign of political “bosses" in New York politics: "That useful institution, the ballot-box, has let out its charge of free votes, and blown a large aperture through the body politic of Bossism. It is getting extra clear...that the bosses must go." ? Swipe right to get a closer look at the cartoon. And take a look at the third image in the set to see an 1884 glass ballot jar from our collection.
