One thing we really loved about "Axé Bahia" was the emphasis on other forms of expression such as Capoeira. Based on African choreographies of celebration and combat, capoeira has for centuries been emblematic of defiant, self-defined notions of blackness and Afro-Brazilian identity. Did you know its practice was illegal in Brazil prior to 1937? Here's a clip from "Encruzilhada: A Passagem (Crossroads: The Passage)" by Marco Aurélio. Filmed in Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, Encruzilhada reflects on capoeira as a meeting point of Africa and Brazil by conflating the ring in which it is performed with the spherical Kongo cosmogram and a sidewalk sewer cover. The circle, like water, is an enchanted realm of encounter and a means of passage, at least symbolically, to other places. #PSTInstaSwap #PSTLALA #MuseumInstaSwap @fowlermuseum
