Rabbit Island is a remote 91 acre island, located just east of upper Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula on Lake Superior.
The largest of the Great Lakes, Lake Superior is a 350 mile long, 3 quadrillion gallon of body of water that contains 10% of earth’s fresh surface water and is considered to be the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area.
Each summer @rabbitisland hosts artist residencies, and I shot this image while making a short film during a weeklong stay on the island. The day prior to this moment of glassy calm, we were pummeled with a fierce wind and rainstorm which resulted in being able to surf a point break wave that had never before been ridden!
The island has never been developed or subdivided, and a few years ago it was preserved by a conservation easement through the Keweenaw Land Trust, assuring it’s unique ecosystem will remain healthy in perpetuity.
