Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto // Rabbit kitten ears - Some species are so familiar and so recognisable that it becomes possible to make successful images of them even when they are not completely visible. I’ve always liked this image of an alert rabbit kittens’ ears, not only because its unconventional, slightly abstract quality but also because it doesn’t conform to certain photographic ‘rules’. Of these perhaps the most tedious and blindly adhered to is ‘the rule of thirds’ which in certain cases works adequately but as is so often the case with photographic dogma it can stifle and compromise creativity. This ‘rule’ states that I should have off-set this rabbits ears, having them on either the right or left hand side of the frame, but for me one of the most appealing aspects of this opportunity was the feeling of symmetry. Whenever I lead photographic trips or give 1-2-1’s I always emphasize that the individual needs to try and capture the images that appeal to them, that reflect their view of the world and their interpretation. This is after all the fundamentally artistic aspect of photography, it is the individuals’ opportunity to communicate their own experience of the world, through their own images and this will never be achieved if we limit our choices to accommodate the arbitrary rules of others.
