The World at Night project
Stars above Himalayas in a crystal clear night of Nepal. The last lights of the setting moon on the other horizon shines on Mt Thamserku (6623 meters) not far from Everest. Constellation Orion, the Hunter, with the Orion Nebula (right) rises above the World Heritage Sagarmatha National Park.
A frame from a timelapse sequence, I photographed this on a 2009 imaging project in Sagarmatha National Park. A star filter on the lens created the spikes, highlighted the bright star Betelgeuse. This Red Giant star, a thousand times larger in diameter than the sun, is on the very end of its life, waiting to stun the Galaxy with a supernova explosion. At ~ 600 light years away it’s one of our closest supernova candidates. When it happens (anytime in the next several thousand years!) it may outshine the full moon.
