Photo: @andy_mann // Sometimes you just don’t want your photo to be taken. I totally get it. You’re hot, the sea ice is gone, seals are no where to be found and you’re not feeling “yourself” today. This polar bear, as cute and cuddly as he looks, is suffering a harsh reality, feeding on bird eggs, kelp and grass for the next few months until the winter ice returns. Photographed on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック & @natgeopristineseas in 2013 with @Cory Richards @enricsala @davidquammen @paulroseexplorer in Franz Josef Land, Russia during a 40 day expedition. After years of campaigning, in 2016 Russia announced the expansion of the the Arctic National Park by 74,000 square miles to include these 191 islands, creating the largest protected area in Russia.
