Oil replaced many commodities once traded along the Silk Road, but low prices have led to flatlining employment. - Personal Note: The most giving aspects of photography and storytelling occur when not expecting. The Mangghystau region of Kazakhstan is a vast, remote space. Hours can be spent seeing no one. This area is also known for the wealth beneath the ground - oil. But we know not all was rosy in an industry often affected by fluctuating prices. It was a hot, humid late afternoon and needing a break, my friend, and colleague, @anushbabajanyan and I, stopped at the first seemingly inhabited place we could find. Within lied the unexpected…hues of pale greens, muted mustard, and a man before an emptied cigarette rack, eating with his wife in silence. We asked what he was doing in this unique lit place. Alas, he had lost his job in the oil business, a casualty of dropping commodity prices, now idling his time over dinner in this strange din of beauty, as empty, desolate and beautiful as Mangghystau. - My latest story in @NatGeo, in this months issue, The New Silk Road, our overland journey through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan photographed throughout 2016 and early 2017.
