My heart is breaking for California. The landscapes. The lives and memories, built over decades and generations, that are woven into the homes being destroyed. The wild animals that have nowhere to go. It’s tragic. • It hurts even more to witness, knowing that science has predicted these worsening tragedies. And knowing that some want to play God and peddle lies that science isn’t real, depending on which way you vote. Science just is. Fact. Science, and in particular climate science, should be our number one bipartisan priority. Our legacy and our future depend on it. • Today, @scientific_american wrote: “The 155,000-acre Thomas Fire in Ventura County that continued to grow over the weekend is now among the state's 20 largest wildfires. Experts say the extent and destructive force of this winter's fires is not coincidental. The effects of climate change—including higher average temperatures, drier conditions and abundant fuels—are evident, they say. ‘This could be something that happens every year or every few years,’ California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) said.” • I want us to do better. To be better, for one another. But even in such pressing times I find hope in those who choose to do their best. Thank you to the firefighters out there, working tirelessly, risking your lives to protect the lives of others. This thanks goes out to both the men and women who chose that path, and the often overlooked inmates in our prison system who have been recruited to fight these dangerous blazes as part of their time in prison. Regardless of your pasts, you’re all incredible heroes today. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. #California #Wildfires #ThomasFire #ClimateScience
