“Lindbergh’s Berlin may be gray, but it is far from sad. Famous for preferring to work in black and white, he is hardly a devotee of the realism of color, and especially not for portraits. Grouped together in the midst of all the black-and-white images, a handful of color photographs offers a surprising interlude. Shots of Dan Flavin’s fluorescent installations and of the Tresor techno club with its high-octane lighting reinforce the grays, underscoring their richness and energizing the book as a whole.
The photographs taken at Tresor reflect Lindbergh’s long-standing fascination with inactive industrial sites. From New York and Los Angeles to Nancy in eastern France, he has often used former warehouse districts as backdrops, hearkening back to his childhood spent among Rhineland factories.”
