Photo by @bethjwald // This week I am posting photos in honor of the winter solstice, a vision of winter days and long nights, cold beauty and hard, hungry times, of trying to say warm, waiting, hoping for the light; this season also seems emblematic of current affairs in this country. In this photo, a throwback from my slide archive, Dr. George Schaller , one of the world’s foremost conservation biologist, watches the snow fall through the hole in a yurt, at a nomad camp in the Wakhan Corridor, Afghanistan, during a wildlife survey in the Afghan Pamirs in 2004. This photo has always to me symbolized Dr. Schaller’s hopeful, pragmatic and constant striving, for 60 years, to secure a better future for wildlife, environments and traditional cultures, a passion and life’s work that began in 1956 when he accompanied the Murie expedition on the first scientific survey of what is now the Arctic Wildlife Refuge. Their efforts to preserve this pristine area led to the creation of ANWR, and George has continued to vigorously advocate for protection of the Reserve, the wildlife and the way of life of its indigenous people. I spoke with George on Tuesday, after opening of the reserve to oil drilling was passed as part of the Republican tax bill. He said that no conservation victory is permanent, and that he will continue to fight to save the Reserve and its critical habitat free of industrial exploitation. Here is a link to an op-ed piece in the NYT that Schaller wrote this fall: https://nyti.ms/2ziRgek . Yesterday he wrote that “Greed, arrogance and lack of morality toward other living beings still shape our vision of the future… “ #Afghanistan #wakhancorridor #Afghanpamirs #Pamirs #mountainculture #Badakshan #onassignment #centralasia #georgeschaller #naturesgreatestdefender #conservationheros #yurt #nomad #nikonnphotography #nikon #wintersolstice #lightanddark #lookingtothelight #analogphoto #realfilmphotography #throwbackthursday @thephotosociety @ilcp_photographers @thewcs @natgeocreative
