@outofedenwalk, Paul Salopek’s 12 year journey walking in the footsteps of our ancestors, a long term project I have been working on with Paul and National Geographic for nearly five years. - Women weave silk, one of the main products of the Silk Road, at the Handicraft Development Center Said Ahmad Kho’Ja Madrasa, in Margilan, Uzbekistan. - Personal Notes: More often than countable, I come into a space, place or time when nothing seems to fit. It happened when @yulia_grigoryants and I came to this silk weaving center quietly placed along an equally quiet street in Margilan. My dear friend, writer, the one walking the world, Paul Salopek, had visited these talented weavers months earlier, suggesting we should too. Upon entering this small weaving room, the realities set in...this is just not a visual place. About to leave, the notion of giving up felt weak, giving into false notions only in mind...something of importance was here. After more than 2 hours unable to find meaning, a kind weaver took a break from the loom, resting upon a red carpeted bench. The brief time she sat, the narrow space began to unfold, its history, purpose, the reason Yulia and I had traveled for more than a day just to be in this room. And come on, how can you work on a story about the Silk Road if not spending time at a silk factory? - My latest story in @NatGeo, in this months issue, The New Silk Road, our overland journey through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan photographed throughout 2016 and early 2017.
