One of the most exciting 2017 projects was imaging my 13th solar eclipse in August, this time for @ナショナルジオグラフィック, flying on a small jet from Central Oregon to 45000 ft high in the Stratosphere above the Pacific. As the total eclipse began in this very thin atmosphere the sky became pitch black, almost like being in space. That 2 minutes passed like a second, an amazing moment for the crew.
A few minutes before the moon shadow reached the mainland US, this photo (slide 1) became the first view to the totality across the entire web and probably the most viewed. @ナショナルジオグラフィック editors selected it as one of most moving photos of 2017 (see the gallery on natgeo.com).
