Photo by @FransLanting When I showed up at the San Francisco airport with a deer hunting stand as part of my luggage for an expedition to Antarctica, it triggered some questions and when I told people at the check-in counter that I needed it to photograph penguins, they were incredulous. But I managed to get it through—at a price. I’d been thinking about a different perspective to photograph emperor penguins at their remote breeding colonies on the sea ice off Antarctica and this is one of the devices I came up with. On location we assembled it and hauled it to the edge of the colony—carefully, so as not to disturb the birds. Once I climbed onto it I was able to get the different point of view I had imagined.
