Photo by @rezaphotography // #Iran, #Tehran, Friday Prayers at the University As a student of architecture at the Beaux-Arts in Tehran in the 1970s, I was intimately familiar with every part of this low wall surrounded by immense trees. Beneath it, we would assemble to reinvent the world and it had a perfect view of the football pitch. Years later, that atmosphere of liberty, creativity and artistic rebellion was a far-off dream. The university, once the scene of our joyous co-educational assemblies, was now under a new regime, the rule of the mullahs. The football field of the university, at the heart of the city, was transformed into a public place where the Friday prayer was held. The veiled women would go there each week, shielded from male eyes. I was no longer a student, but I knew how to access this now intimate space. Years later, when the poet Shamlou saw this photo, he remarked, “Now, women march towards their own funerals.” I wanted to show the sadness underlying this procession by emphasizing the vertical perspective which ends off-camera. The intense verticality of the women and the trees has a crushing effect on the spectator who seems to be pulled inside the photo. The use of black and white emphasizes the sense of mourning.
