The Archbishop’s cloak, or mozzetta, today appears red, but #Titian originally painted it a deep purple. The color has changed because the blue pigment, a coarsely ground blue glass called smalt, has degraded over time and is now colorless. If you look at the right side of the painting, the lead white paint of the veil has protected the smalt and the cloak retains its purple hue.
