A single bite and release at dark by where all the turtles haul out prompts How to avoid an adverse interaction with a shark aka a #sharkbite 1. look around 2. Don’t splash or make excess noise 3. Don’t wear bright flashy colors or especially w a spot or small panel of white or bright yellow near an appendage or anything dangly and flashy 4. Don’t swim, surf, dive in bad visibility or low light 5. Don’t swim surf or dive near river mouths, harbor entrances, or areas of heavy run off or discharge. 6. Don’t swim, surf, or dive in areas where people are or frequently fish or spear fish. 7. Swim, Surf, and dive close to buddies and look out and around for each other and stay close together. 8. Be sensitive to the presence and behavior of potential prey items and don’t swim, surf, and dive near prey item “colonies.” 8. Keep moving, changing directions, this is all part of looking around. Worst Case: If approached: 1. Look at them/Face them/Turn towards them/Swim towards them. If that’s not enough to scare them away then firmly place your hand on top of the head of the shark, lock your elbow out, and leverage yourself up and over or beside. Worst worst case: -You didn’t see it coming: Tourniquet asap, people generally die from blood loss not actually getting eaten by a shark, control the bleeding it is so important, Seconds matter. Lastly, if you are bit please don’t blame the shark they are just trying to do their job and survive and it’s harder and harder for them because they have to compete with commercial fisheries who take millions of tons of fish out of the ocean and generally don’t put anything back in.
