Photo by @kitracahana // The Mescalero Apache tribe holds a traditional coming of age ceremony and feast to mark thirteen-year-old Mia’s transition into womanhood. The ceremony, which spans four central days, is organized by Mia’s family and attended by hundreds of members of the local Apache tribe in Mescalero, New Mexico. Visitors come from across the country to participate in the feasts. Consisting of sacred ceremonies, ritualistic dancing, singing, prayer, and food, the puberty ceremony is one of the most important events in an Apache woman’s life. Upon a girl’s first menstruation the planning begins for her ceremony which can sometimes be years in the making. For Mia, the ceremony is a strenuous test of endurance as she reenacts the Apache creation story, embodying the White Painted Woman, the first woman according to the Apache belief system. Guided by a medicine man and a medicine woman, Mia dances each consecutive night for a longer and longer duration, culminating finally with her dancing through to sunrise and then running towards the sun. While she dances in the main teepee each night, professional groups of Crown Dancers perform symbolic dances around a central bonfire. Upon completion of the ceremony, Mia is given her Apache name, “She Who Overcomes The Wind.” 2016.
